「There is / There are」の構文は、「（場所に）～があります」「～がいます」と、不特定の人やモノの存在を表します。
日本語の感覚とは少し違うため、主語の考え方など、いくつかのポイントをしっかり押さえることが大切です。
この構文の主語は、文の頭にある There ではありません。
本当の主語は be動詞の後ろに来る名詞です。
There is a cat under the table.
本当の主語は a cat (単数)
There are three cats under the table.
本当の主語は three cats (複数)
この「本当の主語が後ろにある」という感覚が一番のポイントです。
be動詞に is を使うか are を使うかは、後ろに続く名詞が単数か複数かによって決まります。
後ろに来る名詞が「1つ」または「1人」の場合。
There is a book on the desk. ：机の上に本が1冊あります。
There is an apple in the box. ：箱の中にりんごが1個あります。
後ろに来る名詞が「2つ以上」または「2人以上」の場合。
There are some books on the desk. ：机の上に本が数冊あります。
There are five students in the classroom. ：教室に生徒が5人います。
be動詞を使った文なので、否定文や疑問文の作り方はbe動詞のルールと同じです。
There is / are ＋人・物＋場所 で「～に…がある」「～に…がいる」の意味になります。
主語が単数の場合 is 、複数の場合 are になります。
There is a book on the desk. ：机の上に本があります。
There is a park near my house. ：私の家の近くに公園があります。
There are some presents under the tree. ：木の下にいくつかのプレゼントがあります。
There are many people in the station. ：駅にはたくさんの人がいます。
There was a pen on the table yesterday. ：昨日、テーブルの上にペンがありました。
be動詞の後ろに not を置き、There＋be動詞＋not＋主語 にすると否定文になります。
※否定文では some の代わりに any を使うことが多いです。not ... any で「一つも～ない」という強い否定を表します。
There is not a cup in the box. ：その箱の中にコップはありません。
There isn't a pen in my bag. ：私のかばんの中にペンが1本もありません。
There aren't any pictures on the wall. ：壁には写真が一枚もありません。
be動詞を文頭に置き、be動詞＋there＋主語 にすると疑問文になります。
※疑問文でも some の代わりに any を使うことが多いです。
Is there the library near your school? ：あなたの学校の近くに図書館はありますか？
Is there a convenience store near here? ：この近くにコンビニはありますか？
Are there any questions? ：何か質問はありますか？
There を使って答えます。
is の場合
はい、あります。 → Yes, there is.
いいえ、ありません。→ No, there isn't.
are の場合
はい、あります。 → Yes, there are.
いいえ、ありません。→ No, there aren't.
数を尋ねるときは、How many とセットで使います。
How many の後ろには必ず複数名詞が来るので、be動詞は are になります。
How many students are there in your class? ：あなたのクラスには何人の生徒がいますか？
答え方→ There are forty students. ：40人です。
What is there in the box? ：その箱の中には何がありますか？
答え方→ There is a ball. ：ボールがあります。
I have a pen. ：私はペンを持っています。 → 所有
There is a pen on the desk. ：机の上にペンがあります。 → 存在
It is a book. ：それは本です。 → 「それ」と指し示したものが何であるかを説明。
There is a book on the desk. ：机の上に本があります。 → どこに何があるか、存在を初めて話題に出す。
